Jazz All State Auditions

Audition Requirements

All Wind Instruments: 

Students will be asked to play three scales: the chromatic scale, and two of the following: C, G, D,A, E, F, Bb, Eb, Ab. For ranges, etc., see the all state scale guide. http://www.allstateauditions.com/mmea/auditions/scales/scales.htm 

Students will play the melody (for Fall of 2012 it will be “Take the A Train”), the corresponding etude, and then improvise over the same changes. 

Students will sight read. 

While playing the melody, etude and improvisation, students will play along with a recorded rhythm section accompaniment, such as can be downloaded from the website. 

Piano/Guitar/Vibraphone 

Students will play the melody (for Fall of 2012 it will be “Take the A Train”), the "comping etude", the C wind instrument etude, will improvise over the changes and are responsible for the appropriate rhythm section "style sheet‟ as well. 

Pianists: comping during the etudes is encouraged, but not required. 

Students will sight read. 

While playing the melody, etude and improvisation, students will play along with a recorded rhythm section accompaniment, such as can be downloaded from the website. 

Bass Guitar: 

Students will play the melody (for the Fall of 2012 it will be "Take the A Train"), the corresponding bass line etude, the Bass clef instrument etude, and improvise over the changes. 

Students will be responsible for the appropriate rhythm section "style sheet‟. 

Students will sight read. 

While playing the melody, etude and improvisation, students will play along with a recorded rhythm section accompaniment, such as can be downloaded from the website. 

Drums: 

Students will play along with a recording of instruments playing the jazz all-state audition piece (for Fall of 2012 it will be “Take the A Train”), play the drum comping etude, then trade four's with the recording. 

Students will sight read. 

Students are responsible for the drum "style sheet‟. 

Vocalists: 

Students will sing the melody for the jazz all-state audition piece, their part of the arrangement (for Fall of 2012 it will be “Take the A Train”), then scat for one chorus. Sopranos sing the 2nd soprano part. 

Sopranos and Tenors will sing the high voice version of the ballad (for Fall of 2012 it will be “I Love You”), Basses and Altos will sing the low voice version. 

There is no sight reading at vocal auditions.
